The use of technology has become a significant component of many safeguarding issues. Child sexual exploitation; radicalisation; sexual predation: technology often provides the platform that facilitates harm. An effective approach to online safety empowers a school or college to protect and educate the whole school or college community in their use of technology and establishes mechanisms to identify, intervene in and escalate any incident where appropriate.

The breadth of issues classified within online safety is considerable, but can be categorised into three areas of risk:

  • content: being exposed to illegal, inappropriate or harmful material
  • contact: being subjected to harmful online interaction with other users; and
  • conduct: personal online behaviour that increases the likelihood of, or causes, harm.

_ Governors and proprietors should ensure, as part of the requirement for staff to undergo
regularly updated safeguarding training (para 64) and the requirement to ensure children
are taught about safeguarding, including online (para 68), that online safety training
for staff is integrated, aligned and considered as part of the overarching safeguarding
approach.

Safeguarding children in their use of technology is a priority for The ICT Service. If you have any concerns about the adequacy of your current E-Safety arrangements, The ICT Service can help.

To help you respond to the local and national context we offer the following sessions:

Staff Awareness Raising

1.5 hours

Following the Byron Review, a great deal of information exists on how to stay safe online but

professionals, parents and children are often confused by some of this information and don’t
always feel confident about what they should do. A whole staff training session will provide
strategic advice and guidance to:

  • review the latest findings
  • help staff to recognise the current climate of E-Safety
  • see how to reduce the risks
  • plan an E-Safety education programme
  • develop a whole school action plan.
This session can be adapted for schools who require refresher training or have a specific
area of concern which they would like to address, such as social networking, gaming,
protecting your professional reputation.

E-Safety Policy Review / Development

2 hours

All schools and settings need to recognise the importance of E-Safety as part of the wider safeguarding remit. Following an awareness-raising session, let us help you to review your school position on a range of E-Safety issues and develop policies and practices to ensure the responsibility for online safety is shared across the school workforce and that you have a robust set of policies in place.

Parental E-Safety Talk

1.5 hours

(a surcharge will be made for talks taking place ‘out of hours’)

A talk specifically for parents focussed on understanding the risks to children. Using supporting video material and up-to-date data, the session will also include some practical advice about how to minimise these risks and help children to stay safe in the digital world.

Additionally, we can conduct a survey with your pupils to see what they say they are doing online and report back to parents during the event. Afterwards, we will provide some links and resources for your website or school newsletter.

In-Class Awareness-Raising Experience Sessions

2 hours

Let us work with your pupils using hands-on tasks to deal with issues they may encounter in the online world. The sessions are practical and collaborative and will address relevant issues related to children’s online behaviour.

Examples of sessions include:

  • Year 1 / 2 Click Click – How to behave online
  • Year 3 / 4 Making the Internet a Better Place
  • Year 5 / 6 Cyberbullying or Social Networking
Or ask us about a bespoke session including supporting Yr 6 pupils in their transition to secondary school.

Ofsted Section 5 Briefing for schools published in September 2013 recommended that schools 'audit the needs of all staff and provide training to improve their knowledge of and expertise in the safe and appropriate use of new technologies’. Use our set of questions to audit your staff. We will send you a link to an online form to pass on to your staff for them to complete within an agreed timescale.
Once the results are compiled, we will send these to you to inform your future professional development plans.
